At a glance
The figures below come from an analysis of five waves of the National Health Interview Survey, covering 134,959 U.S. adults from 2002 through 2022. The study asked whether people had used each practice during the previous 12 months.
These numbers describe use, not whether a practice is right for every person or a substitute for professional care. They offer a useful picture of where meditation and related practices sit in everyday American life.

From 2002 to 2022, meditation and guided imagery or progressive relaxation use grew about twofold, while yoga use grew about threefold.

Meditation was the most commonly reported practice in the 2022 data. The study also found that use increased across the two decades it examined, with growth reaching many demographic and health groups.
For people looking for a place to begin, the useful question is usually not how much to do. It is whether a small practice helps them pause, notice what is true, and take the next right step. That is the principle behind the practical resets in Zen Power Mastery.

Method note: The analysis used population-weighted data from 134,959 civilian, non-institutionalized U.S. adults across the 2002, 2007, 2012, 2017, and 2022 survey cycles. Figures on this page are quoted from that analysis.
